The travel insurance policies provides cover to UTS employees, directors and students on approved travel. The cover includes domestic and international travel. The traveller is automatically covered upton receiving written approval from their supervisors.
Travel insurance cover is available for maximum 365 days from the date of travel. If your trip is likely to go over 365 days please contact the Tax and Insurance Section via email at insurance@uts.edu.au
Personalised travel insurance certificates may be requested for organising visas or for making a claim.
Business and approved study travel insurance is free of cost.
UTS travel insurance operates on a pre-approved basis. It is important that the appropriate travel form be signed by your supervisor before approved travel commences.
Private travel, incidental to UTS approved business travel, that is, up to 25% of approved travel is covered.
Note: for students on exchange and In-country study program the portion of private travel covered is as defined by Institute for International Studies.
Private travel, in addition to the 25% limit, is the responsibility of the traveller to organise prior to commencing the trip.
Accompanying family: that is, spouse and dependant children are covered under UTS travel insurance.

All UTS Staff and Students travelling overseas for business or study on authorised travel are automatically insured for this travel. The insurance cover is comprehensive, however it is recommended that staff and students take adequate precaution with their personal property at all times.
When making a claim, proof of the travel being authorised is required (attach copy of authorised travel form). To obtain a personalised certificate of currency, please contact Tax and Insurance Section or email insurance@uts.edu.au
Domestic Travel is defined as travel within Australia and outside a 50km of the UTS sites. Please ensure that the domestic travel form is completed before travel commences.
A significant number of minor claims have been lodged recently with our travel insurer.
As a means of minimising increasing travel insurance premiums and reducing claims which adversely affect future premiums, an excess or deductible of $200 will be required per non medical claim.
Consequently, all non medical travel claims made in respect of travel commencing after 31 December 2003 will be subject to a $200 deductible.
Claims for medical expenses are not subject to the $200 deductible.
Incidental Private travel is defined as travel taken for leisure during or after the completion of approved business travel or an approved study trip.
A traveller can move between “private travel” and “business travel”, utilising the same insurance facility. The maximum aggregate duration of the incidental private travel component, provided without cost, is 25% of the total approved business / study travel.
Please Note, incidental Private travel insurance is NOT available for “leave of absence”.
Associated incidental private travel is 24 hour cover for:
- the journey to/from the country of study if the journey is by other than a reasonably direct route or if stopovers exceed 48 hours.
- mid-semester and between semester travel to another country.
- weekend and public holiday travel to a country which does not have a common land border with the country of study
residence within a country of study for non-academic purposes prior to or after a period of approved academic activity.
UTS travel insurance is not available for leisure only travel.
It is the responsibility of the traveller to organise private travel insurance.
As part of UTS Travel Insurance Cover, an emergency contact procedure has been put in place. In the event of an emergency overseas, a free reverse charge call may be made to American International Assistance Service (AIAS), which operates 24 Hours 7 days, from anywhere in the world. This will put you in touch with their emergency assistance service. All you need to do is:

MEDICAL AND OTHER EMERGENCIES
Some examples of emergency situations include being hospitalised, or a need to be evacuated, or all your personal belongings including passport, credit card and money has been stolen etc. You Should contact the above emergency reverse charges telephone number for assistance.
Personal Injury
All claims, and circumstances which may result in a claim, should be promptly reported via email at insurance@uts.edu.au. Download a claim form to complete. Your claim should be supported by medical evidence, reports and receipts, and copies of your itinerary and authority to travel.
Failure to promptly report a potential claim may prejudice the acceptance of the claim by insurers. All claims must be forwarded by you to UTS Brokers, Aon Risk Services. Details are provided on the claim form.
General Claims
For baggage, money and other general medical claims, it is important that you report the incident to the relevant person. (For stolen goods report to the police and obtain a police report or a report number).
- Complete the AIG travel claim form
- Attach all supporting documentation to substantiate the loss
- Forward the claim to Aon Risk Services (as per claim form)
- Most importantly, keep copies for your records.
- Claims - Claims arising out of or in connection with employment not being approved academic work experience or equivalent, are not covered by UTS insurance.
- Income Tax - Supervisors with staff intending to work in another country for a period in excess of 90 days, should discuss foreign and domestic income tax arrangements with the International Office well before their staff leave Australia.
